5 Reasons to Take Family Photos at the Philly Art Museum

I’ve photographed this family four times now—from each child’s sleepy newborn days to this joyful, on-the-move one-year session—and every time, I’m reminded just how special it is to watch a little one grow. For this first birthday milestone session, we met at one of my favorite Philadelphia locations: the iconic Philly art museum.

If you’re wondering where to do your baby’s one-year photos, this spot might just be perfect for you too. Here’s why:

1. The Architecture Is Stunning (and Timeless)

The grand steps, the columns, the stone pathways—all of it creates a clean, elegant backdrop that looks beautiful in photos year after year. It’s one of those locations that won’t feel dated in 10 or 20 years when you’re flipping through your family album.

2. There’s Room to Roam (Great for Toddlers!)

One-year-olds don’t love sitting still—and that’s exactly why this location works so well. The open plaza and surrounding paths give curious little ones space to explore, while still keeping everything within a beautiful, photogenic frame. It’s a great way to capture movement, personality, and those belly laughs that are so unique to this age.

3. You Can Dress It Up or Down

The Philly Art Museum gives you flexibility when it comes to wardrobe. This family paired neutrals with spring floral prints, which looked so beautiful against the stone. Whether you’re going for classic elegance or laid-back and casual, the location works with your style.

4. It’s Right in the Heart of Philly

If you’re local to Philadelphia or just visiting, this spot is both convenient and iconic. It’s a beautiful way to tie your family’s story to the city itself—especially if you’ve had important life events here.

5. It Works Year-Round

We did this session in the spring, but no matter the season the art museum always delivers. The neutral stonework isn’t dependent on lush greenery or flowers, so you get a consistent, gorgeous look no matter the time of year.

If you’re thinking about booking a family session for your baby’s first birthday—or even just want to document your baby during this fleeting season—let this be your sign to make it happen. Sessions like these don’t just give you pretty pictures; they give you a way to hold onto the details you never want to forget.

Whether it’s your first session or your fourth (like this sweet family!), I’d be honored to help you create something lasting.

BEHIND THE LENS

Hi, I'm  Courtney.

I believe the best photos happen when there's more playing than posing. More connection and less perfection. My sessions are easygoing, lightly guided, and filled with the moments you'll miss most someday.

Historic homes have a way of telling a story long before anything is ever hung on the walls. Collected details like original millwork, tall ceilings and worn hardwood floors give older homes their depth and character. When thoughtfully chosen, artwork can become part of that story rather than competing with it. Oversized family portraits are […]

Meaningful, Practical, and Experience-Based Ideas (Plus a Local South Jersey Option) If you’ve ever stared at a baby registry wondering what to buy, you’re not alone. Yes, diapers and bottle brushes are useful. But the most meaningful baby shower gifts are often the ones that aren’t on the registry. If you’re looking for baby shower […]
