Some of the best family portraits happen when you let the location do the heavy lifting. And Winterthur, with its sprawling lawns, winding garden paths, and soft, tree-filtered light, is basically the perfect co-star for a family session.
This family of three came for a late September shoot. As a Wilmington, DE family photographer, I couldn’t have asked for a better time or crew.

What to expect from a family session at Winterthur
When you book a family session at Winterthur, you’re not signing up for stiff, posed photos. Instead you’re embracing movement, exploration, and the kind of candid moments families really remember.
Here’s what we aimed for:
- Tender, in-between moments: baby reaching for one parent while the other smiles; sweet baby curiosity while wandering the lawns.
- A blend of posed and natural: a few “look at the camera” shots, but mostly letting the family interact on their terms.
- Variety in setting: lush greenery, architectural lines of the estate, garden benches, stone hideways, and natural light through trees.
With little ones especially, a relaxed pace is key. At Winterthur, the space invites slow wandering. There’s so much to see! Families a chance to explore at their own pace and parents have a minute to breathe and connect while I capture the magic.

Letting the environment do the work
One of the things I love about photographing families at Winterthur is that the scenery almost steps into the role of a supporting character. The hydrangea-lined paths, the historic stone walls, and plenty of architecturally-interesting nooks and crannies give every photo a sense of place.
And because the location carries so much visual interest, the family doesn’t have to do much except be themselves. Parents get to just enjoy the moment with no frantic rushing and no choreographed posing. With a little one in their arms, that’s often the most natural way to tell the story anyway.
For families who want something timeless, a session with roots in history, nature, and a kind of effortless beauty, Winterthur delivers in spades.

Why Winterthur works especially well for young families
- Safety and freedom: wide lawns, sloping paths, and soft grass means kids can move without you worrying.
- Timeless backdrops: gardens, hedges, stone benches, old-world architecture means you get portraits that look as good in 10 years as they do now.
- Flexibility: You don’t have to be in full “photo mode.” Walk. Explore. Pause. Be together.
If you’re looking for family photos that are relaxed, artful, and full of heart (i.e. not stiff poses or forced smiles) Winterthur delivers.

Thinking about booking your own portraits at Wintherthur?
If you love the idea of a Winterthur family session in Wilmington, DE, here are a few quick tips:
- The light in early fall is soft and dreamy. Perfect for kids and family portraits. Flowers in bloom throughout the spring and summer add another stunning texture to your photographs.
- Dress in comfortable layers. The wide open grounds can get breezy, and easy movement keeps little ones relaxed.
- Let the session flow. Try not to over-schedule or expect “perfect” moments. The beauty often comes in the small, unscripted ones.
