5 Reasons Why Fall is the Best Time to Take Family Pictures

Fall Family Photos in Philadelphia

Fall in Philadelphia is exquisite. Growing up on the west coast, autumn was still filled with colors but was short-lived and accompanied by an almost-daily showering of rain. Autumn on the east coast is warmer, drier, and much sunnier. It’s definitely made taking fall family photos through this wonderful season a lot easier!

I believe beautiful photos can be taken year-round. There’s so such thing as bad weather or poor lighting; you can still create emotion-filled, joyful portraits if you have the necessary skills and equipment.

However, there are definite advantages to taking family photos during certain times of the year. Keep reading to learn the top 5 reasons why I think fall is the best time to take family photos!

Looking for a Philadelphia family photographer?

01. GREAT LIGHTING

There’s nothing more beautiful than sunshine in fall. The earth has moved a bit further away from the sun, softening the light and giving it a flattering glow. It reflects off the changing colors of the leaves and gives your photos a beautiful, golden glow that can’t be achieved at other times of the year. Plus, you’re able to have your session a bit later in the morning or earlier in the evening as golden hour makes scheduling more convenient!

02. COMFORTABLE TEMPERATURES

No one wants to sweat through a photoshoot in the summer, right? Autumn has the perfect temperatures to avoid pit stains and sweaty brows while still being able to layer your clothes. Sweaters, cardigans, and nice pants help your photos to appear timeless and a bit dressier than shorts and tees do.

03. PERFECT TIMING FOR THE HOLIDAYS

Scheduling your family photos in the fall ensures you can receive your images back in time to actually get holiday cards in the mail. Once you get too far into late November or early December, there’s no guarantee your images will be edited in time for holiday shipping deadlines.

Photographs also make great holiday gifts! You can take your beautiful new images and create custom calendars, ornaments, or even heirloom albums as a really special gift. You can also print and frame your favorites for Grandma to finally have some updated photos on her mantle.

04. GORGEOUS FALL FOLIAGE

When I think of fall, the first thing that comes to mind is the colors! These natural, earthy tones create the perfect neutral backdrop so your photos don’t clash with your other home decor (because you’ll want to print and display your images!). Fall clothing also tends to favor more earthy, neutral tones than the bright spring and summer months, which helps your family mesh with the gorgeous colors around you.

05. SUMMER BUSYNESS IS OVER

Fall is a great time to take family photos after summer activities slow down. Coordinating family schedules becomes easier as family vacations, summer camps, and nonstop social events no longer fill the calendar.

Finding a great outdoor location is also easier, as they aren’t as busy with families enjoying them. Plus, there are some cool portrait spots that only open in the fall, like apple orchards and pumpkin patches!

GRAB YOUR PSL

I could think of more reasons why fall is the best time to take family photos, but these are my top five. So grab your pumpkin lattes, your coziest sweaters, and head outside to take advantage of this magical time!

Historic homes have a way of telling a story long before anything is ever hung on the walls. Collected details like original millwork, tall ceilings and worn hardwood floors give older homes their depth and character. When thoughtfully chosen, artwork can become part of that story rather than competing with it. Oversized family portraits are […]
