If you’re reading this and have a little one on the way, congratulations! I’m so glad you’re thinking about ways to document this precious milestone in your (and your baby’s) life. Believe it or not, you might miss the bump once they’re here! So when is the best time to take maternity photos? Keep reading to find out!
Maternity photos allow you and your child a glimpse back into a relatively short period of time–one that they were a part of but will never remember. This season in and of itself is beautiful, and important to document. It’s an opportunity to do something for you, to put on a pretty dress and celebrate what your strong, incredible body is able to do. Plus, it will give you and your partner a chance to slow down and revel together in the last few months before your family grows.
As a professional photographer, I recommend around 7 months (~28-36 weeks) as the best time to take maternity photos. During this part of your third trimester, your bump will be nice and round but you most likely will still be comfortable enough to be on your feet and move around for a time. You also don’t want to worry about an early delivery and risk having your baby before your photoshoot is scheduled!
I recommend booking your maternity photographer at least 3 months in advance to get the date and artist you prefer. It’s also important to have enough time to plan your session–ordering clothes to try on, determining the location you’d like to be in, and gathering any props you’d like specially photographed.
You can also book your newborn photographer at this time–these photos are usually taken within the first two weeks of your baby’s life.
I would love to document this precious time for your growing family, in a beautiful location that represents you. Learn more about the process here.
